The Brewer's Apprentice Mead Connection
Mead,
the traditional drink of love! We have
perfected our mead recipes and are extremely pleased with the results. Mead
is fermented honey, a simple recipe, yet it is unlike any other alcoholic beverage
you have ever had. You can make it still or sparkling, and optionally you can
add fruit puree (add $25 per batch). You can also add fruit extract, at no extra
charge. Whatever you choose, let us know when you make your appointment, and
we'll make sure we have everything fresh, and on hand.
We use 60 lbs of fresh local honey, usually
Amber Wildflower, in every batch! The cost is $225.00 for 72 22oz bottles.
The fermentation time is extended and the flavor is deepened with aging. We
think that the results are worth both the wait and cost.
We have many customers who enjoy making Mead,
and they seem to like adding real fruit to flavor it. The most popular flavor
has been either raspberry or blackberry. Fresh fruit in copious quantities
is best, though whole frozen fruit can be used also. We have also experimented
with "mixing" after the Mead has aged properly. Our own personal
favorite is about a 4:1 ratio of Mead:Chambord, which yields a smooth fruity
flavor and is excellent for sipping in front of the fire.
In fact, for trivia buffs, the
word "honeymoon" has its origins from the practice of the newlywed
couple consuming Mead for one month after the wedding. It was believed this
would produce lots of sons. In any case the honeymoon was a sweet deal??
Hmm, we won't pretend to know the exact story, as it's likely been told
so many times over Mead itself that the edges of truth have become frayed.
What we do know for sure is that Mead is delicious.............
